The Importance of Resistance Training

Resistance training. It can take many forms and go by many names, but one thing is always certain: it can benefit everyone. Simply put, resistance training is any type of exercise where your body is working against an external force that resists your movement. There are all sorts of different ways to go about it: bodyweight exercises using gravity as the resistance, floor exercises, resistance bands, free weights, barbells, etc. The key to taking advantage of this type of training is figuring out which form is best for you so that you can progress safely, sustainably, and with killer results! Correcting muscle imbalances, decreasing pain, improving posture, increasing muscle, losing body fat, increasing energy, feeling better…these are just a few of the improvements you can expect from your resistance training routine.

The average person loses 3-5% of their muscle mass per decade through a natural aging process called sarcopenia. The decline in health associated with a loss of muscle is significant. Metabolism slows, hormones shift in the wrong direction, injuries start to pile up, bones get weaker…unfortunately, this list goes on and on. The good news is that you can intervene and stop or reverse this process at any point regardless of your age, health history, or fitness experience. In fact, if you’ve never done this type of training before or if it’s been a while, YOU are going to see the greatest changes the quickest! Generally, "newbie gains" can last from 6 months to a year with the most significant strength gains coming in the first 3-6 weeks.

If you do have a bit more experience under your belt, not to worry. There is plenty of hope for you, too! Most people who are consistent with their training perform the same exercises in their "comfort" zone year after year…and 9 out of 10 see little to no change after that initial "newbie" period. Sound familiar? This can be discouraging for many, because NOT getting results for the work you put in can be supremely frustrating! Most folks in this situation simply lack the knowledge of how to manipulate the variables properly in order to maximize their success. I study this stuff around the clock because I love helping people in this position train smarter, not harder. You deserve to make consistent progress until you achieve your goal, and with the right regimen of resistance training, you can and will!

I’ve spent the last 20 years of my life working with individuals of all ages and capabilities to help them attain their fitness goals. Nothing fires me up more than helping people get there, because I have seen the life-changing effects it can have over and over again. Being able to participate in the activities you love, keep up with the kids or grandkids, live with less pain, have more energy, look better, feel better, enjoy more vitality, more virility…these are some of the benefits you can expect from proper resistance training. Fortunately, this list also goes on and on!

If you are ready to live your most extraordinary life, resistance training is an important part of the equation and I can help you do it the right way with the best possible results. Stay with me…I can’t wait to take you there.
